About me

I’m a designer and illustrator with more than 6 years of professional experience who is currently working at Atlassian based in Sydney, Australia. Growing up in Indonesia, I remember doodling away imaginary characters and creating simple games on pen and paper. Little did I know that this passion has led me to a career in design, where I get the opportunity to enrich people’s way of living by being in the intersection between design, technology, and humanity.

Over the years I've learnt that design is more than just making things look pretty, pixel-pushing or shipping by a certain date. At its core, it’s about understanding the person and business you are designing for, and the set of recommendations a team decides on to solve the problem. This is why I strongly believe in thoughtful user research and an open, collaborative approach to design.

As a visual thinker, my expertise lies in interaction design, conceptual thinking, design systems, and rapid prototyping. Where I would like to grow more is in designing for scale, which includes accessibility, extensibility, and new technological medium such as VR / AR. To grow my craft, I constantly challenge myself to do random side projects - from hackathons, Inktober, to Vivid Sydney.

When I’m not furiously zooming in and out of Figma, you can find me drawing illustration in a cafe, going for a snorkel, or slurping the newest ramen in town. If you have an interesting opportunity or want to grab a coffee and chat design, feel free to say hi on LinkedIn or send me an email at jamesrotanson (at) gmail (dot) com
